Debit Card Security
Debit Card Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I am confused about when to use my
PIN number with my debit card
A. As you well know, CCECU is about Safety First
from the standpoint of protecting your funds. Having said
that, we understand and strive daily for Member Service
Excellence. In addition to lowering the Daily Limits and
Blocking International (High Risk) Transactions, the following
rules¹ were implemented when the counterfeit card activity
began hitting our member accounts November-December 2008:
| Type
of Transaction |

¹These rules
were implemented because many of the fraudulent transactions
were at gas stations, convenience and/or discount stores. A
number of the purchases were Gift Cards. TIP: Using
your card as a Debit transaction with your PIN #
provides the maximum safety for your checking account.
² Counterfeit Debit/Credit Cards are often generated by use of
Skimming Devices, a small electronic unit which has been found
attached to Gas Pumps and/or ATM machines. Handheld skimmers
are sometimes used at establishments where the card is taken
out of the cardholder’s sight for payment (e.g. restaurants),
then the perpetrator sells the card information for
monetary reward. TIP: We recommend that you BE AWARE
of your Surroundings, DO NOT let your Debit Card out of
your sight, NEVER use your Debit Card over the
Internet, and ALWAYS SCRUTINIZE ATM machines and
electronic devices for possible tampering.
³Discount/Convenience Stores, such as Wal-mart, Ross,
Marshall’s, 7-Eleven, etc.
Because Merchant Category Codes are not uniform, exceptions
apply. Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience to our
members in combating the criminal activity of a relatively few
dishonest persons. |
